ESBS Certification

The European Society for Brain Stimulation (ESBS) has developed harmonised European guidelines to ensure high standards of education, training, and certification in non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES).

The ESBS Certification process provides a structured framework that defines the minimum theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and safety competencies required for professionals applying NIBS in both clinical and research settings. Certification is valid for five years and requires renewal to ensure continuous quality standards.

To make the information accessible, the certification materials are organised in four dedicated sections:

  • Certification of Courses
Courses that fulfil the ESBS requirements in theoretical and practical training can be formally certified, ensuring they meet the society’s educational standards.

  • Certification of Training Centres
Institutions offering clinical or research training in TMS and/or tES may apply for ESBS certification, demonstrating that they provide sufficient case volume, supervision, and expertise.

  • Certification of Trainers
Experienced professionals can be certified as ESBS trainers if they meet the criteria for expertise and teaching experience, ensuring quality supervision and training.

  • Certification of Trainees
Individual applicants (clinicians, scientists, or technical staff) may apply for certification upon completing the required theoretical courses and supervised practical training, as documented in their training logbook.

This certification framework aims to harmonise standards across Europe, strengthen clinical and research practice, and support the recognition and reimbursement of NIBS-based interventions.
